I just arrived back in Ann Arbor and already I feel sucked into the chaos of school. But my mom put it best when she said "Caroline, we need to at least LOOK pulled together... even if we're feeling a bit scattered inside!" There's no doubt that the last few weeks have been stressful and at times overwhelming, and the impending doom of finals is starting to loom large.... yet there's something about the holiday season that really puts it all in perspective.

The Christmas lights are up, Starbucks has holiday cups, and my Kate Spade scarlet bow flats are seasonally appropriate (I would argue... always appropriate)

Finals are just tests... and papers... and in three weeks time they will all be behind me. And I will be relaxing on the beach in my Kenneth Cole monokini (hitting the gym for that one....), reading Portrait of a Lady and sketching out the spring collection for THE BEARON.

I'm so thankful for my amazing family and friends who need me grounded, but still keep encouraging me to slide into a pretty dress, smack on some red lip stick and take the world by storm.

I am thankful for...

my elegant and terribly cool friends

and for every opportunity I have had through THE BEARON

and through this entire crazy journey.

Do you have those friends that are just so incredibly talented that you want to tell EVERYONE you know about how awesome they are? Like how in this vintage store today I kept asking the owner if she knew Kelly Johnson, because Kelly is the most gorgeous queen of vintage, and thus by default these women should be best friends?

Well Christian is one of most talented and fun photographers I have ever had the pleasure of working with. He assisted on my first editorial cover, and we've been pals ever since.

Plus he just shot my 11-page spread for January's StyleLine Magazine

(I CAN'T WAIT!! LANVIN PEOPLE, LANVIN!)

Sooooo the moral of the story is that you should work with him. Whether you're a model, an actor, or just in dire need of a fantastic photo of yo' face, Christian's da man.

PLUS (because all beautiful, talented people come in pairs apparently), working with Christian includes styling by the absolutely (you don't even know) wonderful Jerilyn, a friend of mine with an incredible eye and a fantastic personality to match.

getting settled...

According to my dear best friend and decorating confidant, I need to move in. My 117 sq. foot stark white box of a bedroom is bare, with the exception of one rather intriguing Billy's bookcase (stolen from my brother, in contrasting wood... I think it adds "character"... or so I tell myself) meant to show off my collection of design coffee table books and my favorite new "acquisition" ... a pair of patent leather Jimmy Choos. Yet without a tried and true system of organization, and a seamless way to display all of my favorite little treasures, the 4 shelves just look cluttered and messy. My artist's desk is slowly beginning to look accessible yet it's still a far cry from inviting ... and I find myself holed up in coffee shops and libraries blogging instead of in the privacy of my own room.

I adore sitting in public spaces, I do, but I don't think the reason I'm choosing to skip my bedroom is because of the overwhelming amount of inspiration at the Starbucks of Ann Arbor. I know that if I finally settled in, my room would seem less uninspired and constricting and actually be a good place to curl up with a cup of tea to troll the blogs and finally finish my new website.

So with this, I'm launch a campaign to move. I'm moving in. Finally. After 2.5 months in my stark, boring, and window-less cave, I'm going to initiate a face lift. Just in time for the cold months... so I never have to leave and I'm always just a few steps away from my dearest Jimmy Choos....

Yesterday I had the terribly good fortune to shoot with the talented Christian O'Grady for the January 2011 issue of Detroit's StyleLine Magazine. In honor of a friend's move to Chicago, we bid him adieu with a magical night at local hotspot vinology. ran into my darling friend angela.

My favorite musician is Jason Mraz so it was to be expected that we had to attend last week's show at Eastern Michigan University. I was trying to count... I think it was my 5th show

- When I was 14 (?) my dad took my friend and I to his acoustic show in Detroit

- In high school, my dad took me to Pittsburgh to meet Mr. A-Z himself at a show there (coolest.dad.ever.)

- Detroit show with Justin Nozuka and Matt Nathanson

- Last summer, Detroit outdoor show

- Last week, EMU

damn.

This was one of his best shows by far. At the beginning he came out on stage and thanked everyone for coming and personally welcomed (and thanked) his opening act for playing with him. It was incredibly sincere and set the tone for a fantastic (but too short!) show.

Plus, the show (and the weather!) served as the perfect excuse to wear my favorite music festival-inspired ensemble!

I wasn't allowed to share my news with you last week because the whole audition and shoot were under wraps but tomorrow, the new Miley Cyrus video for "Who Owns My Heart" debuts and I'm dancing in it! The shoot took place last Monday at the Meadowbrook mansion outside of Detroit and I was lucky enough to be cast as a dancer for the huge club scene.

I can't believe I've already completed my internship and moved out of my NY apartment! Something about being home has triggered my domestic nerve. Maybe it was the pure filth that was my New York apartment... or the fact that I never had time to cook, but now that I'm home, I just can't stop. Cupcakes, frostings, macaroons, and a pot of homemade mac and cheese later, I'm blaming my inspiration on the amazing, fresh ingredients that constantly turn up in my parents' refrigerator. This morning my mom's friend dropped off two dozen plums and three bags of grapes. WHO EATS 24 PLUMS???

My mom's response? "I think Ina makes a plum tart". And there we are.

Back to the Barefoot Contessa we go...

PS I attempted to make my own butter-cream frosting.

(I told you... really inspired).

HOWEVER Light salted butter is not the same as butter.

Don't be fooled.

It's only healthier because your frosting is ruined.

No frosting = Healthier. Lame.

So... It's been a while to say the least. Since December I've lived in Italy, traveled to Spain, Portugal, France, and Switzerland, and worked for 3 months in New York City. In the last 12 months, I have moved 8 times. It's been a whirlwind but I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything. The people I met, the places I saw, and the sheer excitement of being constantly on the move made me love life even more (who knew it was possible??). As some might say, my sparkle is back! I'm refreshed, empowered, and ready to take on the world... whether that's one t-shirt at a time... or one cupcake.

I'm looking forward to sharing my pictures and stories with you. As I begin my final year of college, I have no idea what's next. No matter how many lists I make (yup. I made a list of possible careers. yikes.) I keep reminding myself that the best opportunities come when you least expect it. There's no use worrying about it, the time will come. And so with that, I'll focus on what matters most. Sharing my passion, finding new hobbies, and making the most of it... whether that's in class, on the runway, in the kitchen, or on a t-shirt.

Last weekend I joined some great friends to march with PFLAG at New York City Pride 2010. It was an awesome experience and so much fun to see the streets of New York packed with fellow supporters and friends of the gay community. We marched for hours behind the Macy's balloons, took loads of photos, and of course,

On Top of the World!

Hey guys, Caroline here.

Last week I had the great fortune to visit Interlaken, Switzerland

and spend my weekend tromping through the alps.

My friends Katie and Ryan joined me for a visit to Jungfrau,

also know as The Top of Europe,

one of the highest points of the alps at 11,340 feet.

Considering that my childhood dream was the climb Everest, this was

a surreal experience, and I loved every minute of it!

Plus we were able to take a couple shot of the Peace and Love shirt

at the top of Jungfrau. How cool is that!?

From a new found craving for all things Pamela Love (ummm BEARon ring? I need that...), to an insatiable love of all things shiny and vintage, Jane Aldridge is my girl. Jane and her amazing blog, Sea of Shoes is a daily stop for most fashionistas and even landed this young, leading lady in the pages of Vogue.

So why am I writing about her now, versus every other day of awesome Jane posts? Because everyone always laughs at how much shit I have on wrists... and now I have fabulous company. While I tend to lean towards an mix of gold bangles, friendship bracelets, Cartier ropes, and a black and gold La Mer Collection wrap watch, Jane takes a more monochromatic (and gloriously chic) approach with her all silver baubles.

Weekend Recap!

Caroline here-

It was a crazy and hectic weekend, but definitely one of the semester's best, coming to an abrupt end with a BLIZZARD Monday morning. Thankfully the snow (in APRIL mind you) held off so we could have a bit of fun. So here's the run down:

Saturday morning marked the start of 24 hours of Relay For Life at UMICH. My friend Kaylin was the co-chair of the entire thing this year- a HUGE undertaking, and an even bigger success. The day was sunny and relaxing with everyone hanging out for a great cause.

As you can see, the fields were COVERED with people standing up to fight against cancer. This is by far my favorite event of the school year- the only downside is sleeping outside. Here's some advice lovely readers: camping is not for the faint of heart, and leggings are not warm, no matter how hard you will them to be!

This year I was co-chair of our team with my friend Amy- one of the coolest girls I've met at Michigan, obsessed with fashion but even more into philanthropy and doing whatever she can to get involved.

At 4, I left to go meet up with the SHEI Magazine team to get ready for their magazine launch party and fashion show. SHEI Fest is held every spring to launch their annual issue. This year I was so excited to be asked to pose for the cover shoot! I'm waiting for Jessica to send me the image file of the cover, and then I'll make sure to post it right away.

We had a total BLAST at the show this year- the theme was androgyny, and I had a field day as my lips were painted black while witnessing Crist's runway debut. It was so exciting to work with the SHEI team again- they are a really cool team of unbelievably talented UMICH kids who create an incredibly professional and high-end annual fashion and culture magazine.

After the show, it was back to Relay for a night of shivering, but well worth it for such a great cause! After a nap Sunday morning, there was brunch with my family for my birthday, and then a fitting for another show. The designer, Miho, is a student in the Michigan art school and her pieces are GORGEOUS. I am so excited to wear one of her exquisite designs!

So dear BEARON'ERS, I'm off to sleep. It's been a crazy weekend, and I can't wait for the sun to come out tomorrow and melt away all the snow! Stay warm and keep smiling.

The director of the University of Michigan Center for Entrepreneurship, Thomas Zurbuchen, posted the following on his blog (January 10th), answering the question, why do people continue to work at night?

3) … because they would rather work than sleep

This is what this post is really about. Work is so captivating that sleep just does not make sense.

I have experienced periods like that on a number of occasions. I would rather work than sleep because I doing something extremely important or so exciting to me that I just cannot think of stopping now. It’s the potential of success that motivates beyond boundries – time seems to become irrelevant. It’s like flying – some other force is taking over. You can feel how your entire mind is starting to work in an entirely new way and with tremendous efficiency.

In my opinion, this can only happen if three conditions are met: there is a tremendous sense of purpose; there is a sense of empowerment; and there is an environment of success. I would never put in a lot of time if I don’t understand why I am doing this. I need to know that success depends on me or my team. But, I think the last piece is perhaps the most important. Gratitude or acknowledgments are crucial. Sometimes a simple “thanks” or pat on the back, a mention in a meeting, a cup of coffee – success wants to be acknowledged, or it dies!

So, can we in fact judge the status of an engineering project by observing the parking lots at night?

Absolutely - go look at their parking lot at night, and go visit them in the middle of the night. You will know immediately whether the place is going somewhere!

As motivated young people, I'm sure that many of you identity with Thomas' post. I especially like the last line- "You will know immediately whether the place is going somewhere". So stay motivated, and remember your passions. No one can take that drive away from you, so maximize your potential, get out there, and kick it.

As some of you may know, my grandmother, Phyllis Rooney, passed away early Friday morning. But instead of focusing on being sad, I think the perfect way to remember her is with a post about how stellar she was as a notorious fashionista and supporter of the arts, especially in the Toledo area.

Reflecting on growing up during the Great Depression, Nana told me stories about her childhood dress maker, and about the beautiful fur coats that she treasured from a very young age. She once asked me if I smoked, and when I (stunned) exclaimed that I did NOT, she was surprised... "Of course" she had smoked in school... it was very chic. This is the same woman who completely ruined her feet because she insisted on wearing heels every day, especially on the high school stairwells.

To Easter dinner a few years ago, she donned a blood red poncho (assuming it would pass as a dress), a pair of black opaque tights, black pumps, and a silver metallic trench. My mother almost had a heart attack, but I was thoroughly impressed. This woman realized the leggings as acceptable bottoms trend BEFORE every sorority girl in America...

Nana taught me the importance of dressing the part from birth. I can definitely say that she inspired me to become the woman I am today- sophisticated yet fierce, classy yet cutting edge. She balanced it all seamlessly, and most people remember her amazing passion for fashion and art. The last few years were especially painful for her, and I am completely certain that she has finally found the peace and respect she deserves. Though it seems weird that her Vogue subscription will end after 71 years (she began subscribing at age 16), I have no doubt that she will continue to inspire through her legacy... and through the amazing pieces that she leaves behind.

"Care, I envision heaven to be full of Chanel and Prada... I am certain she is happy".
